Works from the von Bartha family collection included in Surrealism & Beyond

Surrealism & Beyond is an intimate exhibition located in Basel at the von Bartha private residence which pays tribute to almost forgotten avant-garde surrealist artists with a range of works from Europe, Japan and Mexico plus works by well-known artists such as Magritte and Man Ray and contemporary artists who act as ‘heirs of the surrealist spirit’.

 

The exhibition was developed between curator Weiss and Margareta von Bartha, after von Bartha visited exhibition The Star Alphabet of E.L.T. Mesens / Dada and Surrealism in Paris, Brussels & London at the Muzee of Oostende in Belgium, curated by Weiss and was inspired to initiate the project. Within this exhibition, Weiss explore the ‘shadow figure’ of Surrealism, who were active behind the scenes making artworks as a revolutionary statements that were often considered too shocking for their contemporary society. The exhibition Surrealism & Beyond is a tribute to those artists.

 

Surrealism is a 20th-century avant-garde movement, which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images. The movement was created by André Breton in the 1920s, Breton died in Paris in 1966.

 

Famous Surrealists include Salvador Dalí, who was known for introducing the well-known surrealistic image of soft, melting pocket watches, Joan Miro, who joined the Surrealist group in 1924 and Man Ray, who was a significant contributor to both the Dada and Surrealist movements.

 

The Surrealism & Beyond exhibition features works by a number of renowned artists such as Gavin Turk, Man Ray and René Magritte and closes on June 19 th 2016.
