The visitor’s sensory and perceptual experience remains at the forefront of Sarah Oppemheimer’s practise. S-281913, Oppenheimer’s newly commissioned project for Pérez Art Museum Miami, is a floor-to-ceiling large-scale kinetic architectural intervention, intended to reconfigure our spatial and visual perceptions of the gallery.

Situated in PAMM’s Meyerhoff Greene Focus Gallery, Oppenheimer uses light to alter the visitor’s phenomological experience of the room, the works then support wider philosophical trajectories that ask us to consider our human experience in the world. The materiality of the glass and metal boxes which appear suspended in space, encourage visitors to think about the assumed architectural model of the gallery, while the moving elements of the structure ensure the work is in a constant state of flux.

René Morales, the project’s curator, comments: ‘At a moment in history when [our] experience is increasingly mediated through the blue light that emanates from our phones, computers and TV screens, her work reminds us that even in our most fundamental impressions of the world we inhabit require constant critical questioning.’

Born in Austin, TX, USA in 1972, Sarah Oppenheimer now resides in New York, NY, USA. Oppenheimer received an MFA from Yale University. Her work has been exhibited at such venues as the MUDAM, Luxembourg (2016); Andy Warhol Museum (2012); the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (2009); Art Unlimited, Art Basel (2009); Skulpturens Hus (Stockholm); the Saint Louis Art Museum; the Mattress Factory; the Drawing Center; and the Sculpture Center. She is the recipient of a Rome Prize Fellowship (2011–12), a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship (2009), a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (2007), an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Art (2007), and a Rema Hort Mann Foundation Fellowship (2003). Oppenheimer is also a Senior Critic at the Yale University School of Art.

A major solo project by Oppenheimer will be presented in 2017 at the Wexner Centre for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio, and in 2019 at MASS MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts.
