Currently on view at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa – SUPERFLEX’s One Year Project and ‘The Liquid State’
von Bartha artists SUPERFLEX are renowned for their playful, subversive analysis of the world’s economic and social structures. At 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, the artists present a one year project and solo-exhibition The Liquid State, which similarly looks to scrutinise the museum’s relationship with its community.
Located in Kanazawa, Japan, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art showcases visual art, music, performing arts, and film. Through its exhibition programme, the museum seeks to disseminate international art and culture, whilst enriching and promoting the city of Kanazawa.
Viewing the museum as a petri dish, over the course of a year SUPERFLEX will cultivate its own community through the process of fermentation – to grow a new ‘culture’. Cultivation, fermentation, and transformation are key words for the project; in reference to the latter, The Liquid State looks to examine the notion of transformation, notably the ever changing state of humans, economic and social constructions and supranational systems. Three entirely new works have been realised for the exhibition.
SUPERFLEX was founded in 1993 by Jakob Fenger (1968), Rasmus Nielsen (1969) and Bjørnstjerne Christiansen (1969). They live and work in Copenhagen. SUPERFLEX describe their projects as “Tools” – a model or proposal that can actively be used and further utilized and modified by the user.
They have held solo exhibitions at the Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (2013), Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington (2010), the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2010), South London Gallery, London (2009). Kunsthalle, Basel (2005) and Redcat, Los Angeles (2004).
Following their exhibition at the Basel gallery in 2015, SUPERFLEX will open an exhibition at von Bartha S-chanf in February 2017.
