James Howell
James Howell (* 1935 in Kansas City † 2014 in New York) studied at Stanford University and practiced as an architect before becoming an artist. Recognised for his experimental approach to colour theory, for decades Howell meticulously studied the unlimited tonal possibilities of the colour grey through his paintings and drawings. At first glance his works seem to be grey monochrome picture planes however at a closer look, the grey of the painting changes as subtle gradations from light to dark grey become apparent.
