Jean Tinguely

1925 born Fribourg, Switzerland

The Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely (*1925, Fribourg, † 1991, Bern) trained at the Kunstwerbeschule in Basel. Tinguely created sound-producing, motor-driven machine sculptures consisting of metal parts often found at the scrapyard. The leitmotif of his oeuvre is movement that can actively be experienced acoustically or visually. His auto-destructive works turned Kinetic art into Performance art.
