Gerhard von Graevenitz

(* 1934 in Schilde, Ger­many; † 1983 in Switzer­land) stud­ied eco­nom­ics at the Uni­ver­sity of Frankfurt/Main in 1955/56 but changed course shortly there­after by mov­ing to the Akademie der Bilden­den Kün­ste (Acad­emy of Fine Arts) in Munich where he stud­ied art until 1961. In the late fifties he became edi­tor of the jour­nal ‘nota’ and at the begin­ning of the six­ties he was one of the co-founders of ‘Nou­velle Ten­dance’. Graevenitz was inter­ested in the study and visu­al­i­sa­tion of phe­nom­ena like move­ment, light, space, time, struc­ture, ran­dom­ness or pro­gres­sion. He is con­sid­ered a rep­re­sen­ta­tive of the con­struc­tive– con­crete art of the younger gen­er­a­tion which had turned in par­tic­u­lar to kinet­ics. Graevenitz, who had been liv­ing in Ams­ter­dam since 1970, died in 1983 as a result of a plane crash in Switzerland.
